An engineering approach to import substitution in metallurgy

In the face of changing logistics chains and the departure of several foreign suppliers from the market, Russian industry has encountered the need to find reliable domestic solutions. MPP ENERGOSPETSMASH, LLC has actively joined this process, leveraging its powerful engineering and production potential to manufacture analogues and improved versions of critically important equipment. A recent example of this work was the shipment of a complex assembly – a 260-ton lifting beam – for the Oskol Electrometallurgical Plant named after A.A. Ugarov.

In 2025, a lifting beam (Dwg. No. 002.7112.475) was manufactured and supplied to OEMK – a key element of the ladle crane, responsible for one of the most critical operations in production: moving ladles with molten metal.

Given the extreme operating conditions, the highest reliability requirements are placed on such equipment. The lifting beam was supplied complete with custom-made laminated hooks. It is worth noting that for the same crane, ENERGOSPETSMASH specialists had previously manufactured other components, including cantilevers, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to solving the customer’s challenges.

Not Just a Replacement

A key feature of ENERGOSPETSMASH’s approach to import substitution is the refusal to simply copy. Instead, the company’s engineers conduct a thorough redesign of the original design documentation.

This process includes:

1
Strength Calculations

Performing a full cycle of strength calculations to confirm and optimize the design parameters.

2
Drawing Development

Developing new detailed drawings with special attention to improving the product’s manufacturability.

3
Design Improvement

Making design modifications to enhance the operational characteristics and overall reliability of the assembly.

This approach allows not just to replace an unavailable imported analogue, but to offer the customer a more advanced solution adapted to their specific conditions.

Systematic Work and Concrete Results

Since June 2023, ENERGOSPETSMASH has been regularly fulfilling orders for the manufacture of equipment previously supplied from abroad. During this period, 23 units of various products have been shipped to domestic consumers, including:

Key items supplied to customers:

260t Lifting Beam

1 pc.

Driving track wheels (ø710×135)

2 pcs.

Shafts with wheels

4 pcs.

Cantilevers

8 pcs.

Rollers

8 pcs.

This list clearly demonstrates that the company is capable of producing a wide range of critical assemblies for lifting mechanisms.

Accumulated experience, a strong design school, and well-established production processes allow ENERGOSPETSMASH to confidently tackle complex technical challenges in replacing imported lifting and drive equipment, offering the market reliable and effective domestic analogues.
